Introduction to our Lodge

The St. George Abadan Freemason Lodge is currently an active lodge based in Chatham, one of the Medway towns in Kent. It continues to uphold Masonic traditions, having found a new home in the United Kingdom after its significant history in Iran. With a vibrant membership spanning all ages there is truly something to offer for every prospective Mason when considering joining our Lodge.

History and Origins:

Originally established in Abadan, Iran in 1946, the lodge primarily served the expatriate community, particularly those associated with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), which later became British Petroleum (BP). During its time in Abadan, the lodge was a vibrant centre of social and fraternal interaction, contributing to both charitable activities and the local community.

Challenges and Closure:

The lodge’s decline in Iran, began with the nationalisation of the Iranian oil industry in 1951, followed by the political upheavals. As tensions between the West and Iran escalated, it became increasingly difficult for foreign institutions, including Masonic lodges, to operate. The rise of the Islamic Republic, which viewed Freemasonry with suspicion and often linked it to Western imperialism, ultimately led to the closure of the St. George Abadan Lodge, along with other Masonic lodges in Iran. Our Founders were obliged to relocate from Persia in 1952 to Manor Road, Chatham which has been our home since .

Revival in Kent:

Despite these challenges, the legacy of the St. George Abadan Lodge was not lost. Former members and their descendants sought to preserve the lodge’s heritage, leading to its revival in Chatham, Kent.

Today, the lodge remains active, holding regular meetings and continuing its Masonic rituals, social events, and charitable endeavours. It serves as a living connection to its rich history in Iran while contributing to the local community in the Medway towns.

This relocation and revival of the lodge in Kent are a testament to the resilience and dedication of its members, ensuring that the legacy of the St. George Abadan Lodge endures in a new chapter of its history.

Our Values

Rather than working on buildings like the masons of old, today’s Freemasons focus on building themselves as people of integrity, and membership provides the structure to help achieve that goal.

One of the oldest social organisations in the world, Freemasonry is not defined by an ideology. It is open to people from all religions and political persuasions and provides the common foundation for friendships between members, many of which will last for life.

With a membership of more than 150,000 people drawn from communities across the UK, Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or any other perceived differences that can divide us as a society.

Whether participating in events, fundraising for a charitable cause or volunteering for public or community organisations, service is at the very heart of Freemasonry. Our members make valuable contributions by donating time, resources and skills.
